Anycount Box

AnyCount produces automatic word counts and counts in other volume units (characters with spaces, characters without spaces, lines, pages, custom units) for all common file formats.

Why word count tools are useful
How AnyCount Works

Jost Zetzsche's Tool Kit's independent view on why 'word count tools' are useful for translators (© 2006 International Writers' Group.)
Since we just talked about word counts, I would strongly advise you to invest in a word count tool. Without going into the whole complexity of word counts again, here's what I think you should look for: a tool that allows you to count in a variety of formats (including all MS Office formats, PDFs, and tagged files would be the minimum) while using the parameters that MS Word does without its problems.

What?

MS Word's word counts are, as most of you know, notorious for their problems (text boxes, WordArt, and many other elements are not counted), but chances are that your client will still use Word to count words and check your invoice. So the tool should use the same logic in counting words that Word does while including the parts that Word happens to happily forego (and we typically need to explain that to the client). I use PractiCount & Invoice (see www.practiline.com) for this task and love it, but there are a good number of other tools that do very similar things, including AnyCount, TextCount (www.textcount.com), or Total Assistant (www.surefiresoftware.com/totalassistant).

How Anycount works
Files window is the first window, which you see immediately after launching AnyCount:

anycount5

You can add files with supported extensions (.RTF, .DOC, .WPD, .XLS, .PPT, .PPS, .PDF, .CSV, .HTM, .HTML, .XML, .MIF, .TXT, .ZIP, .ODT, .SDW, .SXW, .ODS, .SDC, .SXC, .ODP, .SDD, .SXI, .HLP, .CHM) by clicking Add button. AnyCount automatically sorts them into pages with icons according to their file type.

If you would like to remove some file from the list, select it and click Remove button. Clicking Clear button completely empties list of files to be counted. After you have finished selecting files to be counted, you can either click Settings button first to view/adjust counting settings, or click Count! button immediately, if you are happy with counting settings you have set before:

anycount4

When you are in Settings window, you can adjust count settings for each of the file types of files you have selected on Files screen:

• .DOC (Microsoft® Word for Windows, Microsoft® Word for Macintosh, other word processors)
• .RTF (Microsoft® Word for Windows, Microsoft® Word for Macintosh, other word processors)
• .WPD (WordPerfect text format)
• .XLS (Microsoft® Excel)
• .CSV (Microsoft® Excel, other spreadsheet software)
• .PPT, .PPS (Microsoft® PowerPoint)
• .HTM, .HTML (Hypertext Markup Language file format)

• .SDW (StarWriter 3.0 and later)
• .SXW (OpenOffice 1.0 text document)
• .ODS (OpenDocument spreadsheet format, OpenOffice Calc, StarCalc and other)
• .SDC (StarCalc 3.0 and later)
• .SXC (OpenOffice 1.0 Calc)
• .ODP (OpenDocument presentation format)
• .SDD (StarDraw/StarImpress 3.0 and later)
• .SXI (OpenOffice 1.0 Impress)

From Settings screen you can either click Count! button and start processing of selected files by AnyCount Engine or return to file selection screen by clicking on Files button:

anycount6

After you click Count! button AnyCount engine runs and produces word, line, page or character counts for documents you have selected:

anycount2

After count is completed, results are displayed in the table:
anycount8 After count is completed, you can:
• view count results on the screen;
• print count results;
• export count results into .TXT format;
• export count results into .CSV format (which can be opened by Microsoft? Excel and most other spreadsheet software.

>Also, you can change current count units by clicking Units button:

anycount7

...then click Count! button again and get count on the same files in other count units.

All count units in AnyCount are derived from 3 basic atomic values:
• words
• characters with spaces
• characters without spaces.

You can edit existing count units (for instance, change number of characters in a line or in a page) or create your own count units.
