Testimonial from Jacqui Birnie a Freelancer Translator and MemoQ User
"I was introduced to MemoQ in July 2007. I had already had a brief flirtation with Trados a few years ago which had really put me off CAT tools because I found it hard to get into. I'm not the most confident IT user although not a complete novice but I was looking for a tool where I could be up and running within a couple of hours without the need for extensive, time-consuming and expensive training courses. I wanted a tool which was reasonable in price because it represented a significant investment and I was increasingly coming to the conclusion that translation memory was an area I needed to look into.
I picked up the link for downloading the trial version of MemoQ and the rest, as they say, is history. I printed off the quick start-up manual, followed the instructions and I really was up and running within a couple of hours. The first job I used it for was a Microsoft Excel file - usually the bane of my life - and it was so easy. On export it looked just like the original with none of the fiddly jumping from cell to cell. PowerPoint files worked beautifully too and required very little post-editing.
Now I wonder what I did before discovering MemoQ. I was so impressed that I bought the licence within a month of downloading the trial and I haven't looked back. I probably don't use half the features although that's true of most software but MemoQ does just what I want and as I build up the memory and the on-the-fly glossaries it is becoming more and more useful. Discovering concordance was great as you can look at the same term in different contexts.
MemoQ is a great aide-memoire (especially when you know you've had something before but you just can't remember where), a real boon for consistency and fantastic for people like me who are lazy when it comes to making glossaries. I love the uncluttered user interface, its ease of use and the fabulous support provided by the Kilgray team through the yahoo user group. I've been impressed with everything about it and feel it's the best and most cost-effective investment I've made in a long time. I still think that if I can use it, anyone can so it's an ideal tool for those entering the CAT market who have been afraid to take the plunge so far."
Benefits
MemoQ, the world's most advanced integrated localization environment optimises the productivity of translation and localization and provides the quickest return on investment ever. In the MemoQ ILE, all translation resources are only a mouse-click away resulting in an ergonomy never seen before.
During the design of MemoQ we had only one thing in mind: the optimal environment for translators and project managers. Kilgray worked hard to avoid all useless keystrokes, file operations, and the result is a one-stop environment with every tool integrated in the most transparent manner.
MemoQ is an easy-to-use concept-oriented system. An average translator can learn to use 90% of the program's functionality within just two hours. The remaining 10% is the domain of project managers and clients: you can achieve enormous savings by customizing segmentation rules and enabling server-based project management.
MemoQ offers a single application comprising of a single translation-oriented word processor for all file formats, a translation memory, a term base, an unmatched aligner and provides full support for collaboration through its enhanced client-server architecture.

MemoQ v2.0 postcardware
Kilgray decided to support translators new to technology and release MemoQ v2.0 as postcardware.
In an effort to help translators adopt translation technology and enable them to cope with the translation challenges of today's market environment, Kilgray decided to release MemoQ 2.0 as postcardware. Postcardware means that you have to send a postcard in order to get a never-expiring, fully functional network license.
The postcardware version is MemoQ 2.0, the first acclaimed MemoQ version released on New Year's Eve 2006. MemoQ 2.0 is able to work with several translation memories and term bases, has a fully featured translation grid and a very efficient aligner. Its functionality is rather standard, comparable to that of other popular translation tools. MemoQ 2.0 is able to cover all needs of a newcomer to technology, and using MemoQ 2.0 you can work together with MemoQ servers.
Please note that postcardware does not mean free software. You need to make some effort to get it, but the effort is symbolic: you need to send a postcard to Kilgray's postal address.
So this is what you need to do:
Download MemoQ 2.0 from Kilgray's website.
1) Install and activate it to get a serial number.
2) Write a postcard and include your name, your serial number (you can get it in the Help / Activation dialog), your email address and your postal address. Every piece of information must be legible.
3) Send the postcard to Kilgray, H-1255 Budapest, Postafiók 7., Hungary
4) Wait for an email from Kilgray granting you the right to use MemoQ 2.0 for an unlimited time free of charge.
5) Preferably also send an email to Kilgray's info address, especially if you don't get an answer within a month. The postal service is not reliable in all countries.
6) Happily use MemoQ 2.0 and upgrade to a subsequent edition if you want.
We also created the world's cheapest upgrade path. If you want more than what MemoQ 2.0 offers and you see that MemoQ is a good investment you can decide to pay EUR 99 for a single version jump, i.e. jumping from 2.0 to 2.1, from 2.1 to 2.2, etc. or you can buy the full version for EUR 390/USD 510 and get all upgrades for free - forever. If you want a version jump license, please send us an email.
Please note that this offer is only valid for freelance translators.

MemoQ Version 2.2
Kilgray Translation Technologies, an independent company dedicated to the development of translation productivity tools has announced the release of version 2.2 of the Integrated Localization Environment (ILE) MemoQ. MemoQ has already established itself as a leading software tool for supporting the work of human translators, proofreaders and translating enterprises.
Triggered by customer requests, the new release introduces seamless support for the bilingual RTF format. MemoQ's new bilingual RTF is equivalent in functionality to MemoQ's existing bilingual format, MBD: all files available in any original file format can be exported into and imported from bilingual RTF. This enables proofreaders and reviewers to work in Microsoft Word and import the changes they propose with a single mouse-click. Any MBD can be converted into RTF and back without any loss of data.
The new release also introduces support for views. Users can create views by combining segments with specific segment types or expressions into a single virtual document. Views can combine multiple documents into one or can also split a single document into multiple documents. Views can be sent out for translation just like normal documents and when imported back, they can refresh the content of the original translation documents.
MemoQ has a strong focus on easy-to-use and productive user interfaces and collaboration. Upgrades are always free of charge for registered users of both the server and the client technologies. All existing users are entitled to MemoQ 2.2 for free. MemoQ's five-year development roadmap guarantees investment into the most dynamically developing translation technology acclaimed by dozens of corporations and hundreds of freelance translators.
MemoQ Version 2.0
This major update delivers increased user productivity. The main theme for the new version is networking, featuring a brand new resource server. This server not only stores translation memories and term bases, but also offers the possibility of creating server projects that allow the easy distribution of work among several translators and ensures productivity at an early stage of the learning curve. Improvements on the client side include:
• Support for XML and Adobe FrameMaker MIF file formats
• Improvements to all other supported file formats
• Support for the Segmentation Rule eXchange standard
• Auto-propagation of translated segments
• Better navigation
• Over a hundred more minor enhancements

The Basics (of Localisation workspaces)
MemoQ is an advanced localization workspace. Please read on to learn about the basics of localization workspaces.
During localization you transform documents available in one language into documents available in another language, taking into account the cultural specificities of the target culture. These documents usually bear some resemblance to each other; if you are a manufacturer or a service provider, most of your key documents are related to your fields of activity. If you are a translating professional, you get similar documents from your customer or you get multiple documents about the same topic, e.g. legislation-related matters or user manuals. The localization workspace takes advantage of these similarities.
The most important components of MemoQ include the translation memory, the text aligner, the term base, and of course the word processor.
When you translate in the word processor of the localization workspace; no matter what file format the document is, MemoQ's word processor automatically handles all formatting, you proceed sentence by sentence. After translating a sentence, you can add it to the translation memory.
The translation memory stores pairs of sentences. As you proceed in the word processor, the localization workspace checks if the translation memory holds a similar sentence to the one currently being translated, and if it finds one, it will automatically appear as a translation hit, and the program will colour-code the difference between the current sentence and the sentence stored in the translation memory. For formal reasons, sentences are called segments.
Not only during translation can you create a translation memory. The aligner module lets you choose an original document file and its translation in another file, and tries to establish the matching sentences by statistical means. The aligner’s automatic matching is rather precise in MemoQ, but still, the localization workspace offers you a user interface to correct the errors made by the automatic matching algorithm. The segment pairs created by the aligner are also added to the translation memory. This means that you can also recycle translation performed before the introduction of a localization workspace.
When you are working with a translation memory, it really matters how long a segment is. If you want to build a glossary from certain expressions and their translations, you can use the term base. Terms are expressions in multiple languages, optionally complemented with additional data. The word processor automatically displays the translations of the terms appearing in the text, and you only need to insert them.
These are the basic modules of the world's most advanced localization workspace. In this two-minute introduction, there is only one tool more worth mentioning, statistics. The statistical module of MemoQ allows you to precisely estimate the amount of work you put into translating a job. The main concept behind the localization workspace is productivity, i.e. it helps you perform the same job within less time than without a localization workspace. The statistical module analyses the text, and tells you exactly how much productivity you will gain from using MemoQ for the performance of the translation.
MemoQ is an integrated localization workspace, therefore it is not necessary to use another application during translation.
