MaxiVista Small

Multi Monitor Software Solution
MaxiVista turns any spare PC into a second monitor for your main computer. No extra hardware required. You can seamlessly extend program windows across multiple screens like it would be a single big monitor. Increase your productivity by using multiple monitors.

How MaxiVista works
MaxiVista performs a clever trick, as computers generally lack video inputs which would be required to use a PC as a monitor screen.

Instead of using a video cable, MaxiVista utilizes any standard Wireless LAN or Ethernet network connection to transmit the screen contents or to send keyboard/mouse input to the second PC:

How it works
MaxiVista installs a virtual video driver onto your primary PC which fools Windows into thinking that an additional monitor is installed. The content of this virtual video card is compressed and transmitted to the secondary PC via any standard network connection and displayed by a small separate MaxiVista Viewer program.

In remote control control, MaxiVista transmits the x/y mouse cursor position, keyboard input and optionally the clipboard contents via the network connection.

MaxiVista is completely software based. No need to buy expensive extra displays, video cards, video cables or monitor KVM switches.

MaxiVista is ready to use within a minute. No need to open your PC to install video cards. MaxiVista works flawlessly with any combination of Desktop-, Laptop- or Tablet PCs.

The Viewer program is only about 900 KB small and does not require any installation. It is 100% safe to borrow your company's laptop for temporarily using it as a secondary monitor without the slightest risk of messing up the system. You would only need to delete a single file to fully remove MaxiVista from the PC. The full version includes an identification system to allow multiple installations in the same network without interference between the installations.

Jost Zetzsche's Tool Kit review of MaxiVista
Below is an extract from Jost Zetzsche's Tool Kit providing an independent view on MaxiVista.

Number 2: MaxiVista
After my second laptop recently breathed its last gasp, I went back and forth about whether I should include MaxiVista on my new one. You see, I'm not actually using it right now, but considering how much I used it this last year. . . .

I've mentioned it often enough in this newsletter so I won't go into great detail. MaxiVista is an ingenious tool that allows you to use the monitor of a second computer to expand your own (which is freakingly brilliant - that's MaxiVista-speak - if you work with a translation environment tool and you can have the actual translation on one screen and the content of the translation memory and terminology database on the other), or you can use it to control the second computer with the same mouse and keyboard. Of course, for both of these functions there are separate solutions. The first is supported by Windows when you use a laptop or a desktop computer with a second video card out of the box, and for sharing mouse and keyboard there are lots of hardware devices, but none other combines both quite so well and elegantly. Excellent productivity booster.

Free open source alternative
And as I mentioned a few weeks ago, there is also a free open source companion to this product: Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net).
